Actually, most clutches nowadays are Kevlar, Ceramic/carbon, or an organic metal weave. Asbestos Clutches and brake pads have been deemed unsafe for use.

man your videos are excellent , very informative i am not criticizing you however the only thing you did not mention is the clutch is ASBESTOS it is still sold, and not marked as asbestos , it is a damn shame many mechanics are unwittingly exposed and are under the idea that the clutch/ or brake material is safe non asbestos material ,,,bee safe man

I am so glad i looked this video up it will literally save me thousands. A local shop said i was gonna need a whole rebuild costing over $2000. After he explained the diaphram fingers being stuck in place or broken I realized whats been happening in my tranny. Thanks for the video so much. And you did an amazing job with the details. Hey thanks for the video!... With regards to the section around 8 minutes. Usually when I'm approaching a stop sign and still moving slowly, when I try to put it in first gear I have to push harder on the shifter, sometimes it really doesn't want to go in, sometimes it seems to help to push harder on the clutch pedal as well. Also I get a clicking noise when the clutch pedal is pushed all the way in, and while releasing it. Car has only 80000 km, do you think I should do something about it?

This is fanominol. Did I spell that right? Anyway, this along with a haynes manual will guide me through changing the throwout bearing aka release bearing on my 86 dodge pick up. All of daves videos are easy to follow, like the carburetor one for example. Keep it coming Dave , maybe you can do one on how to change a head gasket, If you didn't already.

I always wondered why clutch discs have such thin material. You'd think they could use more for longer mileage. Maybe they set it up to wear out roughly when the bearing & plate levers tend to fail.

These fine points make all the difference in full understanding. With the simplicity of the mechanism, I may NEVER buy an auto-trans vehicle. Fewer things to go wrong in theory, even though some claim autos can last longer. It's not hard to get well over 200,000 miles on a Toyota (truck) clutch. Not sure about other makes. Many people trash their clutches with pointless downshifting on level ground (just coast & brake the final X yards). Pads are cheap. Save downshifts for long/steep grades.
